ISLAM COULD BE DOMINANT IN U.K. IN 10 YEARS.

The Muslim population in the United Kingdom has increased form 3.0% to 4.8% from 2001 to 2011. Over 600,000 Muslims arrived in that time period bringing the total Muslim populatin to 2.7 million.

However, London is 12.4% Muslim and in some sections of London the Muslim percentage is nearly 35.0%. In the U.K. one in ten people under 25 are Muslim.

In the meantime, Christianity has declined in the U.K. from 71.7% to 59.3% between 2001 and 2011. The majority of Christians were over the age of 60 and less than half the young people describe themselves as Christians.

However, the number of people with no religion has increased from 14.6% to 25%. So those professing atheism are the second largest group after Christians. But the number of Muslims is predicted to increase to 11.3%. By 2050 Muslims may have the third largest Muslim community, as a share of the population, overtaking Europe. It may be that Christianity will be a very small minority by 2050 whereas the Muslim population will continue to expand significantly.
